Serving the Lexington Community for over 200 years
In 1820, what is now known as Historic St. Paul AME (HSPAME) Church was founded when several members of the Methodist Society Church both Free and Enslaved persons rented a brick horse stable located at 251 North Upper Street from Charles Wilkins. The current sanctuary was built in 1826. HSPAME remains active and is recognized as being the oldest continuously used existing house of worship in Lexington and located above the sanctuary are the partial remains of the hidden pathways as the church serve as a station on the Underground Railroad.
